Of course it’s important to know where a story is going, so I would recommend plotting it out. Some authors like to plot in more detail than others. Some say that they never plot at all!
I was surprised to find in my writing, that it was the characters themselves who started to write the story for me and they still do. Sometimes, the final narrative may only bear a passing resemblance to what I thought it would. Even when I put them into a carefully crafted setting, often, they catch me off guard.
When the writing flows, you might find yourself reading a narrative for the first time as you write it, which is a joy if you go along for the journey, or a curse when they won’t take the story where you thought you wanted them to.
Learn to trust your characters. They probably know what should happen next, better than you do.
